Hill Country Gem

Where the Mountains Breathe

Ella is a small town with a very large reputation. Perched at 1,041 metres in Sri Lanka's central highlands, it commands views through the Ella Gap that stretch all the way to the southern coast on a clear day. The town itself is a single main street of guesthouses, cafes, and spice shops, but the surrounding landscape is staggering: emerald tea plantations, plunging waterfalls, and hiking trails that wind through some of the most beautiful terrain in all of Asia.

What makes Ella truly special is the journey here. The train ride from Kandy to Ella is consistently rated among the most scenic rail journeys in the world, winding through tunnels, across bridges, and past waterfalls for six unhurried hours. Arriving in Ella by train is not just transport. It is an experience that sets the tone for everything that follows.

Places to Discover

Top Attractions

Iconic bridges, mist-wrapped peaks, and cascading waterfalls make Ella one of Sri Lanka's most photogenic destinations.

Nine Arches Bridge

Nine Arches Bridge

Built during the British colonial era without a single piece of steel, this viaduct is an engineering marvel set against a backdrop of dense jungle and tea plantations. The bridge is at its most magical at dawn, when mist swirls through the arches and the first train of the day crosses in a plume of diesel smoke. A short walk from the town centre brings you to the ideal vantage point.

Ella mountain trail

Ella Rock

The signature hike of the region, Ella Rock rewards a two-hour climb through tea estates and forest with panoramic views from its 1,350-metre summit. The trail begins along the railway tracks before ascending steeply through woodland.

Little Adam's Peak

A gentler alternative to Ella Rock, this 45-minute hike follows a well-marked path through tea plantations to a grassy summit with sweeping 360-degree views. It is the perfect sunrise outing, and the trail is suitable for all fitness levels.

Ravana Falls

Ravana Falls

One of the widest waterfalls in Sri Lanka, Ravana Falls cascades 25 metres down a rocky overhang just outside town. Named after the mythical king Ravana from the Ramayana, the falls are at their most powerful during the monsoon months from October to December.

Demodara Loop

A remarkable feat of railway engineering where the track loops over itself inside a hill, passing directly beneath its own bridge. The nearby Demodara station is a quiet stop where you can watch trains navigate this improbable route.

Ella Gap Viewpoint

The dramatic cleft between Ella Rock and Little Adam's Peak frames a view that plunges 1,000 metres to the plains below. On clear mornings, the southern coast is visible in the distance. Several cafes along the main road offer front-row seats.

Hiking & Adventure

Ella is Sri Lanka's adventure capital. Beyond the headline hikes, the area offers zip-lining across deep valleys, mountain biking through plantation trails, and rock climbing on the natural granite faces that dot the highlands. For something gentler, walking tours through working tea estates reveal the craft behind every cup of Ceylon tea.

We work with the best local guides to ensure every trail is navigated safely and every hidden viewpoint is found. Whether you want a dawn summit or an afternoon stroll through the plantations, Ella delivers.

Ella Rock Summit Trek

A 4-hour round trip through tea estates and cloud forest to a 1,350m peak with commanding views.

Valley Zip-lining

Soar across Ella's lush valleys on one of Sri Lanka's longest zip-line courses, spanning over 500 metres.

Tea Plantation Walks

Guided walks through working estates where you can meet the pluckers and taste tea fresh from the factory.

Tea Country

Ella sits at the heart of Sri Lanka's tea-growing highlands. The surrounding hills are blanketed in meticulously maintained tea bushes, and several factories welcome visitors for tours that trace the journey from leaf to cup.

The most rewarding way to experience tea country is on foot. A guided walk through a working estate connects you with the pluckers, the landscape, and the centuries-old tradition that makes Ceylon tea among the finest in the world.

Getting There

The Kandy to Ella train is the journey of a lifetime. The route takes approximately six hours and passes through tunnels, across bridges, and along the edges of precipitous valleys draped in tea plantations. We recommend booking first-class reserved seats for the most comfortable experience.

Alternatively, Ella is a five-hour drive from Colombo via the Southern Expressway and hill country roads. A private car with driver allows you to stop at waterfalls and viewpoints along the way.
