Ari Atoll

Where Giants Roam

The Maldives at Its Most Extraordinary

Ari Atoll is one of the largest natural atolls in the Maldives, spanning over 80 kilometers from north to south and encompassing more than 100 islands. It is also one of the most celebrated. South Ari Atoll is home to one of the world's most reliable whale shark populations, with these magnificent creatures feeding in the area's nutrient-rich waters throughout the year. For many visitors, a whale shark encounter here is the single most memorable wildlife experience of their lives.

Beyond the whale sharks, Ari Atoll offers some of the finest diving in the entire Indian Ocean. Maaya Thila is regularly voted among the world's best dive sites, and Fish Head is legendary for its grey reef shark encounters. On the surface, the atoll is home to a remarkable range of luxury resorts, including the famous Conrad Maldives on Rangali Island with its iconic underwater restaurant. Local islands like Dhigurah provide a window into authentic Maldivian culture that most visitors never experience.

Whale Shark Encounters

Swimming with Gentle Giants

South Ari Atoll's 25-kilometer stretch of outer reef is one of the only locations in the world where whale sharks can be found year-round. The Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme, based in the atoll, has identified over 500 individual whale sharks that frequent these waters. Most are juveniles, ranging from 3 to 8 meters in length, though adults exceeding 10 meters have been recorded.

Encounters are conducted responsibly with strict guidelines to minimize disturbance to the animals. You will snorkel alongside these magnificent creatures as they glide effortlessly through the water, filter-feeding on plankton. It is an experience of profound humility and wonder, and one that we consider essential to any Ari Atoll itinerary. We work only with operators who adhere to the highest standards of marine wildlife interaction.
